AÂ message from Kevin D. Crone, CEO, Dale Carnegie Business Group, Canada..
Good Day ,
Last week I asked a very successful business friend how he was and he replied, “Let’s just say, I’m operating in Maslow’s basement.” He meant of course, that he was in survival mode. We laughed together but he went on to say how the recession had upset his business and it’s serious. “You wonder how many more recessions we can take,” he said.
We all know that when people are worried and are scared, they can lose their vision and are less confident about the future.
I don’t know if you saw Senator Ted Kennedy’s son describe how his Dad helped him as a 12 year old, to climb up the hill in his backyard, despite having lost one of his legs to cancer; it was so moving. His Dad told him he could win at anything if he could learn to persevere. At that point his Dad put his arm around his waist and they did it together.
I thought of that example while thinking of my friend’s question. How many more recessions can we take?!!! Well, I think the correct answer is all of them, if we learn to persevere and continue to be enthusiastic about what we are doing.
“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
-Calvin Coolidge
We all need to be reminded that happiness depends primarily (in addition to good health) on one thing only: your thoughts. If we can be passionate about what it is we are doing, we’ll be on the high road to solving all of our problems.
When your thoughts are propelled by an enthusiasm for life, and what you are trying to achieve in business, you find you have unlimited power to develop your own unique potential and business results. In time, regret, guilt, fear and worry are replaced by confidence and optimism.
I’ll bet you need more enthusiasm to get done what you need done – to take charge regardless of the problems – to not be bluffed by our environment. All it takes is a little enthusiasm to do what you can. Here is a reminder of what you can do.
1. Start each day by thinking of all the things you have to be thankful for.
2. Give yourself quick pep talks.
3. Talk and Act Enthusiastic.
Too often we’re over analyzing what to do, looking for magic answers that don’t exist, rather than just getting a little more enthusiastic and getting at it. Knowledge without spirit is like finding yourself on a cold night with all the wood in the world and not a flame with which to light it.
4. Get people on the right subject – things they are excited about.
I don’t know anything in the world that will do more for you right now than enthusiasm.
What you and I need today is to realize that one of the chief reasons for success in life is our ability to maintain a daily interest in our work; to get excited about what’s possible, to have a chronic enthusiasm, to regard each day as important, to do the things you know you should do and do it with enthusiasm.
And as Ted Kennedy said, “You can win at anything if we just learn to persevere.”
Actions:
- Perseverance is so important – remind yourself of all the things you’ve accomplished because you did.
- If you act more enthusiastic, you’ll be more enthusiastic! Walk faster, talk about what’s possible, get at what needs to be done – set and share new goals. Leaders cause enthusiasm. They should never take it away.
As always, I would like to hear from you. And I’m Twittering now! http://twitter.com/MonMornMentor
Have a great week!
To your continued success,
